En 1988, la campaña presidencial del senador estadounidense del partido demócrata Gary Hart parece ir sobre ruedas, y es considerado el favorito. Sin embargo, todo salta por los aires cuando se destapa la escandalosa aventura amorosa en la que el político está implicado. Hugh Jackman y Courtney Ford encabezan un reparto en el que también se encuentran el ganador del Oscar JK Simmons o la candidata al premio de la Academia Vera Farmiga. Basada en el libro del periodista Matt Bai, la película supone el nuevo regreso a las labores de dirección de Jason Reitman, tan solo un año después del estreno de la comedia dramática 'Tully', protagonizada por Charlize Theron. El hijo del también cineasta Ivan Reitman se encarga además de las labores de producción y coescribe la película.
